Phase I Early Orthodontic Treatment
Phase I
Phase I treatment, sometimes called interceptive orthodontics, is an early form of orthodontic intervention designed for children, typically between the ages of six and ten, whose developing jaws and bite patterns show signs of concerns that are easier to address now than after all the permanent teeth have come in. The goal of Phase I treatment is not necessarily to complete full orthodontic correction at a young age, but rather to guide jaw growth, create space for incoming teeth, and resolve issues that could become significantly more complex, or even require surgery, if left untreated.
Not every child needs Phase I treatment, and Dr. Deyo is thoughtful and conservative in her recommendations. When an early evaluation reveals that a child would genuinely benefit from intervention, however, the advantages can be substantial. Reducing overcrowding, correcting a developing crossbite, or guiding jaw width at an early stage can simplify the second phase of treatment later and in some cases reduce the overall time a child spends in orthodontic care.
